Approval of Minutes for September Meeting
Vice Chairperson Patel motioned, Committee Member Mendoza seconds.
- All in favor, none opposed.
Chief’s Report
- Hired lateral from Watsonville, Bilingual, received their Bachelor’s Degree
- Solid finalists for Assistant Chief
- Some overtime and Police Services must be cut due to constricting budgets
- El Grito Festival was a great event
- Personally attended the event and interacted with the community and local persons
- Cameras can be helpful in citations and documentation
- Wants to balance prevention and investigation
- Wants to move the Police Department towards Crime Prevention
- Wants to start a youth mentorship in the City of Salinas
- School Recourse Officers is a large part of youth mentorship
- Would like to create a strong Community and Law Enforcement relationship that meshes together
- The Police Department as a whole is thankful for the SRO’s and the opportunity it brings
- 9/11 Inspection went smoothly it helps demonstrates the accountability of the Peace Officers
Committee Member Comments
Committee Member DeLa Rosa reported how the Salinas Police Department is represented negatively on multiple media platforms. He agreed with the Chief’s report and looks forward to the progress of the Police Department especially in the youth mentorship. Inquired about the possibility of Police Volunteers.
Vice Chairperson Patel thanked the Committee, Chief, and the attending community members. Patel reported on the success of El Grito and the promotion of Community Oriented Police. Agreed with the need for more staffing and funds. Commended the SRO program. Agreed with the concept of cameras being implemented.
Committee Member Metcalfe inquired on POST Training that is available for officers in communicating with the hearing impaired and mute.
Committee Member Lacy reported on the hurricane victims giving them his heart and prayers, deals a lot with abandoned vehicles in his community and Code Enforcement. Would like to see crime prevention and would like to speak with the Police Chief.
Committee Member Mendoza reported on the success of El Grito and how it is the beginning of a strong community relationship, it is important to remind officers to be friendly and that it’s okay to smile, liked the concept of cameras being implemented.
Chairperson Lynch reported on the possible benefits of a youth mentorship and would like to volunteer for the program as he believes it to be beneficial, requested a possible start date for the Assistant Chief, would like to volunteer for a possible Police Volunteer group, would like copies of brochures presented by Gloria Moore, would the like Police Department to start creating an approachable reputation.
Future Agenda Items
- Decided to create a subcommittee to handle the renaming the Committee and the change of time.
